Not only does a "pretty" site not necessarily sell, but it can actually hurt you.

I know that when I end up on a site that is filled with Flash and graphics and music I almost always leave and head to a different site. I don't want to be bombarded by sounds and I don't want to spend five minutes trying to understand the site's navigation.

The look of your site certainly matters, but its ease of use matters much more than its style.

Well, yeah. I agree. Well said and all that... except... my site annewayman.com is old fashioned, looks, to my eye like a clunker and it gets so many phone calls I don't dare change it... I guess I'll have to eventually, but seriously, it's working better and better and I don't know why.

Great post.

I fell into the trap of the "fancy" website when I first started out. Then I realized it was everything I hated when I visited a site. Clunky navigation, too many page clicks required, and useless content—all these things were hurting my business, not helping.

To adjust I started an industry blog with a good, customer-focused about page. I'm also working on rebuilding my business site to be streamlined much like your graphic. And I'm taking the time to do my SEO right.

Thanks for a post that affirms those decisions. Now I can put some of my neurosis to bed.
